More Matters – When it comes to Fruits and Veggies

September is “Fruits & Veggies – More Matters Month”.

This initiative encourages us to eat more fruits and vegetables for better health.

More than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity. Obesity increases the risk of serious health issues including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. About one in five school-aged children (ages 6–19) has obesity.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) makes it easy for us to know what is recommended for daily consumption with the “MyPlate” program. Choosemyplate.gov offers a helpful visual that shows us that half of the food we eat should be fruits and vegetables.

Most fruits and vegetables are tasty AND they are good for our bodies:
Fruits and vegetables:
Provide fiber to help our digestive process
Are rich in vitamins and minerals
Can boost our energy
Are naturally low in calories
May reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers
Come in a beautiful array of colors and textures – making your plate more inviting
Making a weekly meal plan that includes plenty of fruit and vegetables can help ensure you’re eating right every day. A plan can also save you money at the grocery store and save you time as you’re more organized around meal time.

Eating right is part of maintaining overall health. Teaching kids good eating habits can help them grow into healthy adults. And even if you’ve had poor eating habits for years, changing now can impact your future health.

NOW is a great time of year to check out your local farmer’s market for all of the fall harvest fruits and vegetables!
